Tumbleweed Releases MailGate 3.6
New Version Integrates S/MIME, Extends DLP Reporting, and Streamlines FIPS Certification – Added Features Appeal to Governmental Agencies and Regulated Industries
Redwood City, CA – July 16, 2008 - Tumbleweed® Communications Corp. (NASDAQ:TMWD), an industry leader in managed file transfer, email security, and identity validation, today announced MailGate® 3.6, the latest version of its award-winning email security product. MailGate 3.6 adds a number of compelling capabilities for government agencies and regulated industries, including S/MIME encrypted email for data loss prevention (DLP), a granular employee or user-based DLP reporting feature, and integrates the latest elliptic curve cryptography, which will help streamline future Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) certification.
“MailGate 3.6 answers the call from many of our public, regulated and government customers – governmental agencies, in particular, will benefit significantly from these enhancements,” said Joe Fisher, senior vice president of product management at Tumbleweed. “MailGate routinely gets exceptional scores in independent product reviews, particularly for our strong DLP policy engine, market-leading encryption, and superior interface. The rally cry for data loss prevention is everywhere, and Tumbleweed is one of the only vendors to successfully and effectively integrate DLP capabilities into our complete product suite. Within MailGate, these valuable outbound capabilities help protect sensitive information sent via email, which is arguably the most-used business communications channel today.”
In 2007, Tumbleweed received 140-2 Level 1 certification, the benchmark standard for government agency data security, for the security kernel used in its suite of products. Tumbleweed’s customers include government agencies such as the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, all four branches of the U.S. military, and numerous state and local governments. MailGate 3.6 provides customers with gateway inspection of S/MIME encrypted email for both inbound and outbound encrypted mail, thus helping prevent costly or dangerous data breaches. In addition, the added SMTP extension includes an authentication step that helps ensure the true identity of the sender is known.
MailGate DLP policies will drop any encrypted message that cannot be decrypted and reviewed for content scanning or return the message to the sender with instructions on how to send encrypted mail through MailGate. Additionally, MailGate 3.6 provides a comprehensive employee/user-based DLP “summary” report, providing insight into employee or user activity that could expose sensitive data.
Also integrated is NSA-approved elliptic curve cryptography technology, a move that provides one of the highest levels of security while streamlining future FIPS 140-2 and Suite B compliance renewals. FIPS 140-2 is the security requirement for cryptographic modules as defined by the National Institute of Standards for Technology (NIST). Suite B is the set of cryptographic algorithms recommended by the National Security Agency (NSA) to secure classified and unclassified communications.

Tumbleweed's MailGate and Secure Messenger Earn Perfect Five-Star Ratings in SC Magazine Group Test Reviews
MailGate receives coveted “Recommended” rating by SC Magazine’s staff
Redwood City, CA – June 11, 2008 - Tumbleweed® Communications Corp. (NASDAQ:TMWD), an industry leader in managed file transfer and email security, today announced that its Secure Messenger™ product received a 5-star rating in SC Magazine’s Email Security Group test, and its MailGate® product received a “Recommended” rating in addition to its 5-star rating in SC Magazine’s Email Content Management Group Test.
SC Magazine competitively tested various products in both the Email Security and Email Content Management Group Test for the June 2008 issue evaluating the products in six categories: features, ease of use, performance, documentation, support, and value for its money. Both MailGate and Secure Messenger products earned five out of five stars in each of the categories.
SC Magazine reviewers tested Tumbleweed’s MailGate product, a comprehensive, high-performance email security solution in the Email Content Management Group Test, and found the appliance offers “solid email protection and management in one device,” as well as “a solid content filter protecting from accidental data leakage.” MailGate is also honored with the June “Recommended” rating by the SC Magazine review staff for being “quick out of the gate,” and as a product that is “well worth your attention.”
In addition, Tumbleweed’s Secure Messenger, a policy-based, secure message delivery product, also achieved a 5-star rating in the Email Security Group Test. Secure Messenger’s “powerful content and identity filtering capabilities and a multitude of standards-based encryption options will help support most organizations’ administrative and policy needs,” according to the article. SC Magazine specifically recognizes Tumbleweed’s support portal site as “top notch,” and also “represents a fantastic value given the feature set.”
“The SC Magazine product reviews are consistent with what our customers have already been saying about our email security products – time and again, they tell us that MailGate and Secure Messenger are exceptional products,” said Jim Scullion, chief executive officer at Tumbleweed. “Our products help organizations conquer and move beyond traditional inbound protection, providing comprehensive content management capabilities that protect business-critical communications and prevent data loss. We are setting a new bar for email security.”
Tumbleweed’s email security products have been consistently recognized for excellence and performance. In November, Tumbleweed was positioned in the Leaders Quadrant of the Gartner “Magic Quadrant for Email Encryption, 2007.”1 According to the analyst firm, “leaders” are vendors who are performing well today, have a clear vision of the market direction, and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market. The report stated, “One growth trend in the e-mail encryption market has been through data loss prevention (DLP) projects. Companies that invested in DLP initially monitored traffic for policy violations or to understand how their businesses used sensitive data. However, as soon as companies turn to an enforcement mode, e-mail encryption becomes an important mechanism for allowing the transmit of sensitive data.”
